What are the California River Awards?

F.O.R.’s California River Awards are given at a gala event honoring outstanding contributions to river conservation, preservation, and protection. At the California River Awards, the year’s biggest party and fundraiser, monies are raised to support F.O.R.’s work to protect, restore, and sustain rivers—especially to effectively campaign against the greatest threat to California Rivers—the massive $25 billion Water Tunnels proposed to bypass the Deltta.

Mark DuboisThe Mark Dubois Award

Each year Friends of the River honors an extraordinary person or group whose efforts recall the spirit that Mark Dubois, Founder and Director Emeritus of Friends of the River, infused into our organization. The award recognizes those who have taken a leading role in furthering river conservation in California.

Peter BehrThe Peter H. Behr Award

The Peter H. Behr Award is given to an elected official who has taken significant and noteworthy action to preserve and protect California rivers and/or to advance sustainable water policy. The award’s name pays respect to Peter H. Behr (1917-1997), esteemed California State Senator, conservationist, and father of the 1972 California Wild & Scenic Rivers Act.

David NesmithThe Mark Dubois Award Honoree: David “Chicken” Nesmith

This year’s Mark Dubois honoree truly embodies the enduring river spirit of the award’s namesake. David Nesmith, known fondly as “Chicken,” has been a driving force in the environmental and river conservation community for more than 30 years. He directed the Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club and has led campaigns at Friends of the Earth, Save the Bay, and National Land for People. Most recently, as Facilitator for the Environmental Water Caucus, David championed ecosystem restoration and limits to water exports from the delta. While his work and accomplishments are legion, none is greater than his leadership in the successful decade-long effort working with Foothill Conservancy, Sierra Club, and Friends of the River to convince the East Bay Municipal Utility District’s Board of Directors to reverse a decision to raise Pardee Dam, saving miles of the Mokelumne from inundation.

Chicken’s involvement in river conservation doesn’t end with policy work. He has trained and mentored countless river guides and activists for Friends of the River and the Sierra Club’s Inner City Outings. He’s also volunteered with the cancer-support group Healing Adventures. Nothing seems to give David as much pleasure as infusing new generations with the joy of rivers.

As of the time of this writing, and with the support of friends, he was headed to Utah’s Green River, his favorite, after having suffered a massive stroke in 2012, a remarkable testament to David and the healing power of rivers.

The Peter H. Behr Award Honoree: Representative Jared Huffman

jared huffmanRepresentative Jared Huffman is an avid angler and member of the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Budget Committee. In a remarkable feat for a freshman in Congress, Huffman successfully steered his bill adding Point Arena and the Garcia River estuary to the California Coastal National Monument out of the Natural Resources Committee in June. He has also ably opposed several environmentally destructive bills considered by the committee, including the bill to remove federal protection from a segment of the Merced Wild River. He is working closely with Friends of the River and other conservation groups to identify for protection potential Wild & Scenic rivers and other wild places on public lands in his district. Prior to his election to Congress, Huffman served six years in the State Assembly where he chaired the Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee, served on the Budget Committee, and was co-chair of the Legislative Environmental Caucus. In the Assembly, Huffman distinguished himself as a legislator who tackled complex public policy challenges, worked tirelessly to protect the environment, and got results – often by forging bipartisan consensus on difficult issues. Huffman served as a Director of the Marin Municipal Water District from 1994 to 2006. Prior to his election to public office, Huffman was a Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). One of his proudest accomplishments at NRDC was helping forge an agreement to restore a 153-mile stretch of the San Joaquin River in California’s Central Valley.
