Friends of the River...Members

Members are invaluable to the success of Friends of the River's efforts. Our membership numbers give us clout when we stand up in public policy meetings and speak out for clean, free-flowing rivers. Our members give us confidence that the work we do every day is important and valued. And our members provide us with the resources to do that work. Please join us today!

Membership Benefits
All members of Friends of the River receive:

  • Headwaters: a one-year subscription to our seasonal, hard-hitting, insightful newsletter that gives you an insider’s view of water and river issues in California.
  • Action Alerts: information on time-critical issues affecting our rivers, with phone numbers and addresses for decision makers whose actions can be shaped by your personal input.
  • River Adventures: invitations to join us for exclusive whitewater river trips throughout California and other outdoor excursions (also called Member Outings, read more below).
  • Member Events: receive invitations to parties, river gear swap meets, workshops, slide shows, and other opportunities to learn about rivers and meet fellow river lovers.

Member Outings

California boasts some of the most remarkable river canyons in the world. We invite you to experience the magic of California rivers by joining us on a member outing.  Whether you’re taking a lazy float along the mighty Sacramento, paddling hard through Chamberlain Falls, or hiking alongside the rivers' hills; we think you’ll agree that California rivers are a resource worth preserving for future generations. You’ll get a chance to learn about current threats to our rivers and be given an opportunity to help by sending a letter to your elected officials.

Trips are organized and run by volunteers except where noted otherwise. Our volunteers have qualifications comparable to commercial raft guides. Participants may be asked to participate in the trip by helping rig boats, driving on shuttle, or stowing away gear.

Our volunteers do not receive payment for their services. They volunteer their time and energy to the benefit of California rivers.
