Since its founding, Friends of the River has been rooted in a community of whitewater enthusiasts. FOR began with the fight to save the Stanislaus River from the New Melones Reservoir—a movement organized and led by whitewater boaters from across California. More than 50 years later, FOR has grown into a leading voice in California water policy, while never forgetting our river-rat roots.
Today, FOR’s River Program continues that legacy. Our dedicated staff and volunteers lead whitewater rafting trips to inspire river advocates, collaborate with partners, and share a love of California’s rivers.
These trips engage college students, youth, nonprofit partners, legislative staff, and others, teaching advocacy skills, raising awareness about river threats, and connecting participants to both community and the natural world.
The River Program is also one of the most fun and rewarding ways to volunteer with FOR! Whether you’re a guide ready to join our ranks or someone eager to connect with rivers and community through volunteer work, we’d love to hear from you.
If you would like to contribute to the FOR River Program please contact info@friendsoftheriver.org.
Most of our River Program trips take place on the South Fork of the American River, from our riverside base in Lotus, CA—right in the heart of whitewater country.
Two reasons:
-
It’s part of our history. FOR began as a movement of whitewater enthusiasts protecting California rivers. Rafting is in our DNA.
-
It connects people to the natural world. In a time when fewer people are spending time outside, rafting helps participants build a love for rivers—and people are more likely to advocate for the places they love.
FOR is not a commercial outfitter, so our trips are not open to the public. However, volunteers often have the opportunity to join us on the river. Consider volunteering with our river rafting crew!
If you’re not volunteering, we recommend booking with a commercial outfitter on the South Fork.
Not at all! Many volunteer roles don’t involve guiding rafts, but all are vital to supporting our River Program.
Whether you’re a private boater, commercial guide, or have never been on the river before, there are volunteer opportunities for you. Reach out to us at: spencer@friendsoftheriver.org
