Our rivers are the lifeblood of California — shaping landscapes, nourishing communities, and sustaining wildlife. Yet they face growing threats from overuse, pollution, and shortsighted policies. The River Activist Network is where passion meets action. It’s a community of people who believe that protecting rivers means protecting our future.

The River Activist Network empowers volunteers to understand California’s water challenges, share ideas, and stand up for their rivers and communities. Through trainings, resources, and collective action, members gain the skills and confidence to advocate for clean, healthy, flowing rivers. Together, we transform concern into impact — proving that when communities unite, rivers thrive.

Since our inception in 1973, Friends of the River has built a proud legacy of environmental advocacy — protecting the rivers, places, and communities we love. For more than 50 years, we’ve given California’s rivers a voice in the halls of power and in the hearts of the people. Because a river without friends is a river that will not last.
