Raft with Two Whitewater Legends: 2 Day East Fork Carson River Trip with John Yost and Jim Slade for 10 people!

John Yost, founder of Sobek Expeditions, was involved in most of the great first descents of the '70s and '80s, including the Zambezi, the Indus, the Euphrates and the Yangtze.  He's paddled virtually every commercially rafted river in the world. Jim Slade ..."has probably logged more exploratory miles than any human alive..a legend in whitewater rafting," says Paddler Magazine.  This trip is an extraordinary opportunity to raft with two of the giants of whitewater boating.

The trip is a two day Class II float through the magnificent high desert country and low canyons of the east side of the Sierras.  It is suitable for beginners, families with young kids, etc. The season lasts from late May to mid-to-late June each year, as the river runs purely on snow melt (no dam reservoir to feed it through the long summer dryness), so the window is narrow but usually includes Memorial Day and the weekend after schools let out.

All boating gear and meals will be provided. You and upto 9 Guests need only bring their tent, sleeping stuff and clothing. Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Value: Priceless          Donated by: John Yost

Beautiful Color Photograph of Heath Springs, framed and matted

Coming from a lower income family, Darin had no formal training or art school--just an insatiable love of the outdoors and desire to share the story of beautiful places. For him, sharing through still imagery came naturally. He started kayaking in 2002, during his summer season as a raft guide on the "mighty" Klamath River. Three of his fellow guides kayaked, so he’d borrow a boat and go out with them after work or on days off. He has said that many things draw him to kayaking: the people, beauty of rivers and the dynamic nature of water. Darin is now living a dream as an amazing photographer and kayaker.

Custom Handmade Hammerhead Wooden Paddle

Each Hammerhead Paddle is handmade from exotic handpicked woods. No two paddles are exactly alike. The blades and shafts are constructed by multiple cross grain pattern lamination for maximum strength and then shaped into functional paddles. The blades are shaped with dihedral on the power face for clean entry and minimal waggle during the power stroke. The backside of the blade has a slight relief angle to help achieve a smoother release when the paddle exits the water.

Using a wood paddle feels better because it's easier on the joints and the shaft and handle can be custom shaped to the individual. Also an ergonomic bend can be put in the shaft to relieve the torque on the wrist and help with a powerful stroke.

Although the composites are slightly lighter, wood paddles look better, feel alive, have a balanced feel, have soul, and provide for a better workout.

Autographed copy of “A River in Ruin” by Ray March

River in Ruin is a precise weaving of water history—local and larger—and a natural, social, and environmental narrative of the Carmel River. Ray A. March traces the river’s misuse from 1879 and details how ever more successful promotions of Monterey demanded more and more water, leading to one dam after another. As a result the river was disastrously depleted, cluttered with concrete rubble, and inhospitable to the fish prized by visitors and residents alike. Ray A. March, the author of several nonfiction books, is a career journalist and co-founder and editor of the Modoc Independent News. He is also the cofounder of Modoc Forum, a nonprofit perpetuating an awareness of rural life through literature and the arts.

Kistler Stone Flat Chardonnay, 2005‏

Robert Parker: "A new offering from Steve Kistler is the 2005 Chardonnay Stone Flat Vineyard, a Sonoma Coast site located close to the Durell Vineyard. This classic 2005 displays a solid core of intense, concentrated fruit, medium to full body, and high acid, which provides superb freshness and buttresses the wine’s super intensity and richness. It possesses abundant mineral, white citrus, and orange blossom characteristics as well as beautiful purity." (12/06) 96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Yellow-gold. Strikingly complex aromas of poached pear, toasted grain, iodine and mineral salts, with a suave floral undertone. Palate-staining citrus and stone fruit flavors offer an uncanny blend of finesse and power, with a expression of smoky minerality that reminded me of a Montrachet from Marc Colin. Refuses to let go of the palate, finally finishing with strong iodine, toasty lees and pear skin qualities. A really extraordinary new wine from Kistler, from eight-year-old vines in the Parmalee-Hill Vineyard, planted on rocky soil in southwest Sonoma, near the Carneros line."

Handmade California-shaped Bamboo Cutting Board

As seen on the Rachael Ray Show, and in the RealSimple holiday gift guide 2010! The State series in a butcher block architectural plywood made from 100% rapidly renewable bamboo, takes on California. The California board up for auction features a heart in San Francisco. Approximate dimensions: Length (15 -5/8”) Width (13-7/8”) Material Thickness (3/4”), the length and width vary with the edges of the borderlines. The care of your cutting board is simple. It has been given a "salad bowl oil" finish with an FDA approved water based finish, but as always this is an ongoing process and will need to be maintained. We would not suggest submerging the board in water and only a quick wipe with a wet sponge.
