Executive Internships
Executive Director Internship - Open now You’ll work with the leader of a nonprofit learning about the organization, Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers and how all the parts fit together. You’ll help to: research project ideas, evaluate program effectiveness, assist with fundraising meetings, and community building. Excellent opportunity for a very motivated senior or graduate student strong organizational skills required.
Conservation Director Internship - Open now Working for the senior conservationist of FOR you will learn how stakeholders, the public, policy leaders, and the future of our rivers come together. You’ll assist the Conservation Director in researching and developing conservation projects, organizing, and policy outreach. Preference is given to seniors or graduate students or individuals with a background in policy, river, or water issues.
Conservation Internships
Wild & Scenic Rivers Internship - Open now FOR has sought and secured Wild & Scenic designation for over 2000 miles of rivers in California ensuring future generations will be able to enjoy these magnificent rivers! You’ll help our conservation staff research new river segments for designation, build background information on the segments, and organize the public, stakeholders, and opinion leaders to save these precious rivers before it’s too late. You will assist staff in coordination with the members of the California Wild Heritage Campaign. Juniors or seniors preferred.
American River Internship - Open Summer 2009 FOR has led the fight to save the American River from the Auburn Dam a battle we have been fighting since the 1970’s. You work directly with our Senior Policy Advocate who’s led this campaign since the 80’s. You help to research and prepare background information for our website, newsletter, and for distribution to opinion leaders and stakeholders. You will have many opportunities to attend both public and stakeholder meetings and learn about the complex interactions between local, state, and federal agencies. Preference will be given to seniors or graduate students or individuals with an intense interest in the American River.
Hydropower Reform Internship - Open Summer 2009 Hydro projects (dams) are relicensed once a generation thru a complex process that involves all levels of government and years of research and studies. You will work with our staff attorney reviewing comments and challenges during the process, conducting policy research, and communicating with the public and stakeholders thru our website, newsletter, and other means. You will assist staff in coordination with the members of the California Hydropower Reform Caucus. Preference is given to law students, seniors, and graduate students.
Flood Plain Management Internship - Open now FOR is the environmental policy leader with regards to sensible flood plain management, levee setbacks, riparian improvements, and responsible flood control structure planning, development, operations. You will work directly with our senior staff and assist with research, document preparation, and outreach. Preference is given to law students, seniors, and graduate students.
Water Conservation Internship - Open now The fight to save rivers can depend on the amount of water that people, agriculture, and industry need. All too often water conservation is the last thing people think about, yet water conservation can yield more water even in drought years - than expensive and destructive dams at just a fraction of the cost. You’ll assist the Conservation and Communications staff in researching and developing water conservation ideas and activities and prepare information for online education and in-person outreach activities.
Organization Internships
Communications Internship - Open Summer 2009 Getting the message out about saving rivers, reducing water needs, and being river wise is done online, at events, and thru FOR’s many publications and reports. You’ll work with our Communications director and the rest of FOR’s staff researching information, writing content of our publications, and posting content online.
River Quest Internship - Taking applications for Spring/Summer 2010 FOR runs the River Quest program taking at-risk youth out on single day outings. The program combines the thrill and personal challenge of river running with hands-on educational activities, designed to cultivate self-discovery, teamwork, and a healthy lifestyle. You will assist our Rafting Program manager with trip coordination, information requests from partner groups, on-shore support activities, and materials preparation. Preference given to students interested in/pursuing educational carriers especially outdoor education and at-risk youth. There may be Opportunities to go on river with this internship!
On-River Education Program Internship - Taking applications for Spring/Summer 2010 Our on-river education and outings program introduces members, VIPs, decision makers, and the general public to the beauty of California’s rivers. Friends of the River has well over 40 single day and expedition style trips led by our volunteers each season. You will assist our Rafting Program manager with trip coordination, information requests, on-shore support activities, and materials preparation. There may be Opportunities to go on river with this internship!
Outreach & Public Education Internship - Open now All the work of Friends of the River boils down to getting out the word! Be it communicating the what and why of policy or the how of water conservation, be it thru press releases, action alerts, our news magazine, or our website you’ll contribute to them all. This position works closely with our Operations, Communications, and Conservation staff. Preference given to juniors, seniors, or student interested in outreach and communications careers.
