Preservation of riparian environments requires work in many areas: advancing scientific understanding of biology and hydrology, developing new technologies to make more efficient use of less water, behavioral changes in how we use water, and the political will to make needed social changes in how we value and protect aquatic resources. I want to build a broad base of public understanding and support for river conservation and thereby give strength to political and legal actions to protect our rivers. We can build that public support with science-based education, shining a bright light on the destructive and often irrational ways in which we manage water today, and leading people to a wet, personal appreciation of our beautiful rivers. I intend to use my experience as an anti-war organizer, trade union member, and scientist to build synergies with Sierra Club and other environmental advocacy groups, and jointly broaden and strengthen public support for river conservation.
